lit. 'these阿堵 things物', the term was coined by Wang Yan in the Jin dynasty. The story goes that Yan's wife was so obsessed with money that it sickened him, and he refused to even say the word. To force him to acknowledge money, she had a maid pile coins around his bed, so he couldn't get up. The next morning, Yan simply told the maid, 'Get these things out of my sight.'
